Basic Black and White Darkroom

Leave your digital camera & Photoshop at home and experience the thrill of watching a photograph emerge from blank paper to image.  Traditional black and white photography has volumes to teach photographers about the basics of what makes an excellent photograph including; the relationship between light and image, seeing qualities of light, developing an eye for composition, and learning to control print quality. Learn from artist Ruth Kaplan how to shoot, develop and print B&W photographs. This course is designed for beginners, as well as those interested in brushing up on their skills. Students are required to bring a working manual 35mm film camera.

Curation 101: For the Emerging Curator

Experienced artist, curator and educator Jennifer Long will provide participants with a base knowledge of the considerations, research tools, roles, responsibilities and timelines of initiating a curatorial project. Topics discussed include: finding artists, forming a solid exhibition, locating a venue, grants and media.

Writing Grants & Artist Statements

Artist Sara Angelucci has extensive experience both writing and receiving grants as well as serving on granting juries. A detailed look at the granting process, with a special focus on writing an artist statement, this workshop will assist participants in understanding what is expected for individual artist grant applications. With a special focus on photography, this course will help artists learn how to communicate their ideas to jurors clearly and effectively. Topics covered include writing artist statements, image selection and the application.

GOING DIGITAL Part I: Imacon Scanner/Photoshop/Rendering files for print & web
Instructor: Erin Seaman

This seminar based workshop will introduce participants to the new IMACON and EPSON scanning stations at Gallery 44. Offering tips, tricks, information and guidance, this workshop is for those who are experienced with analog photography yet are new and a little unsure about digital imaging. Demonstrations, handouts and discussion on scanning basics, Photoshop tips and tricks, file preparation and color management in preparation for digital printing will be covered.

Lighting
Instructor: Toni Hafkensheid (www.thphotos.com)
Date: Sunday November 16, 10 AM – 5 PM

Cost: $125/$115 members
Utilizing the new studio space in Gallery 44’s production studios, artist, educator and photographer Toni Hafkensheid will lead participants in an adventure in lighting. Demonstrations using tungsten, strobe and other lighting sources will open up the possibilities for making photographs in the studio. Participants will also have a small amount of time to set up their own lighting scenes and do test shots.

GOING DIGITAL Part II: Advanced Photoshop/RAW processing and more

This workshop will expand on Going Digital Part I. Participants can expect to supplement their skills in digital image correction and file preparation with information on raw processing, interpolating, FTP as well as more advanced instruction in Photoshop.

After Image: Presentation & Preservation of your photographs
Gaye Jackson
Wednesday November 12, 6 pm – 9 pm

Your prints are made, your exhibition is fast approaching. But where and how do you frame your work? Artist Gaye Jackson will guide participants through the choices available for presentation of artwork. Topics of discussion include: size, mounting, framing, importance of archival materials, glass, hanging materials and funding sources for mounting an exhibition. Editioning and pricing of artwork as well as archival storage of photographic prints will also be discussed. Samples and sources for framing and storage materials will be presented and compared.

Portfolio Development
Instructor: April Hickox (www.aprilhickox.com)
Date: Wednesday February 4, 6 – 9 PM

Cost: $65/$55 members
April Hickox, Toronto based artist, educator and curator, will discuss how to professionally present your photography for portfolio reviews and for gallery submissions. An information session, participants will receive tips and handouts on talking to reviewers, writing a cohesive artist statement and artist CV.

Ambrotype
Instructor: Rob Norton (www.robnorton.ca)
Date: Saturday February 21, 1PM – 7PM

Cost: $250/$230 members
Go back in time and experience the historical process of the Ambrotype. Emerging artist Rob Norton will guide participants through the creation of images using an enlarger and slides. Participants will work in the darkroom, ultimately creating two Ambrotypes of their own in addition to a brief introduction to the history of the Modern Ambrotype. Darkroom experience is preferred, but not essential for this workshop.

VanDyke
Instructor: Sally Ayre
Date: Sunday March 15, 10AM – 5PM

Cost: $160/$140 members
Go back in time with this workshop and experience one of the earliest photographic printing processes. Van Dyke is a non-silver process that can be combined or used independently to create distinctive brown toned imagery on materials such as silk or art papers. This hands-on workshop with Sally Ayre will teach proper coating, exposing, and developing techniques for VanDyke.

Advanced Ambrotype
Instructor: Rob Norton (www.robnorton.ca)
Date: Saturday March 21, 1PM - 8PM

Take the Ambrotype process one step further. This workshop is designed for those who have taken the Ambrotype workshop or have introductory experience with the process. This workshop will give students further printing time with the guidance of an experienced instructor, with a focus on keeping a detailed journal and instruction on varnishing of the plates.

Shooting Digital

This informative intro to shooting digitally is designed for photographers and artists who are familiar with film cameras but desire training to effectively use digital tools. Topics covered include: shooting modes, files formats, white balance, understanding histograms, using flash and file compression. Participants are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras to the workshop and photographer and educator, Tobi Asmoucha will first guide students through basic digital camera functions with a focus on the needs of the participants. A short shoot and critique of images will help students to put their new knowledge into practice immediately.



All workshops are held at Gallery 44 unless otherwise noted.
